When I joined the USAF in 1978, the KC-135A tankers in service were painted in an overall silver lacquer scheme.

The only markings carried on the SAC (Strategic Air Command) and AFRES (Air Force Reserve) jets were the SAC "Star Spangled" stripe on the fuselage with a SAC patch over the stripe on the left fuselage side and the wing patch over the stripe on the right fuselage.

The Air National Guard units operating the tankers usually carried a unique tail stripe and sometimes state titles on the fuselage.

The silver scheme gave way to an overall aircraft grey scheme f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar… in the 1980s and SAC eventually allowed some interesting unit tail markings as seen in this example f16crewchief.deviantart.com/ar… .

Here is a small selection of KC-135A and E jets while they carried the overall silver scheme.  I hope you enjoy seeing these jets, many of which are still serving in the USAF, as they were over 33 years ago!
