EC-130Q-LM, 156165 seen at AMARC in May 1992. I was unable to tell if this was a VQ-3 or VQ-4 aircraft, since the EC/Q's never carried any unit markings.

Note all of the graffitti left from the TACAMO crews honoring the aircraft for their retirement after the type's replacement by the Boeing E-6A.

TACAMO was an acronym for "Take Charge and Move Out" and were tasked with communication with the Ballistic Missile Submarine fleet for transmitting EWO commands in case of nuclear war.

Is that Pacman trying to eat the NAVY script on the side?

A friend of mine helped develop the electronics for the TACAMO. He has told me some interesting stories about some of the trials in the aircraft. If only I could remember some of them.

It is an interesting aircraft and mission. Since my first assignment was with nuclear weapons, I have always been interested in the nuclear mission.

My friend worked for Calspan/Cornell. He also invented the first 'Skadi' avalanche beacon. [link]

Interesting. Did you see my photo of the Calspan NC-131 I posted a while back? The also had a T-33 with an F-94A/B nose grafted on it.

That's pretty cool, i've never seen electronic equip on the wing tip, even the new EC's don't do that.

[link] is a pic I shot at Luke AFB when these acft were still active. They were specialized comm acft and carries a sevearl hundred foot ULF antenna that was spooled out from the empannage and towed behind the acft for comm w/ subs. You can see two of them in this pic, they look like funnels coming out of the cargo door and beaver tail.
