F-18D-27-MC, 163734 assigned to VMFAT-101, MCCRTG-10, based at MCAS El Toro and seen at Luke AFB on 2 May 1993.

Modelers note, there are often questions asked about the difference in the antennas between F-18A/B acft and the later F-18C/D jets. Compare the tails of this "D" model with the Sharpshooter's "B" model [link] parked just behind this jet. You can see the C and D model jets had many more threat warning 'doodads' on the fin!~

It is. The alternate technical term is 'thingie'.

I learned "whatchamacallit" from a wonderful Pennsylvanian woman, also a AF term?

No. Obviously that term is not technical enough, I would never be used in the military... :)
